Sri Aurobindo in Surat
Sri Aurobindo
came to Surat from Calcutta on 24th of December 1907 and was in Surat till 31st of December 1907.
The main
purpose of his visit to Surat was to participate in the
All India Annual Convention of the then Indian National Congress and to lead
and to represent the spirit of the Nationalists in the convention against the
mild approach of the Moderates.
The
sequence of events that took place in the year 1907 is as
follows:
December
21: Leaves Calcutta for Surat, the venue of
the 1907 session of the then Indian National Congress.
December 22: Addresses a meeting at Nagpur.
December 24 –
25: At Surat, presides over the
conferences of Nationalists delegates.
December 26:
First day of the Congress session at Surat.
December 27:
Second day of the session: Sri Aurobindo gives the order that leads to the
breaking of the then Indian National Congress.
December 28:
Presides over a meeting of the Nationalists.
December 31:
Leaves Surat for Baroda.
Celebration of The Centenary of Sri Aurobindo’s
Visit to Surat
24th
December 2007 marks the beginning of the Centenary Year of the Lord’s visit to Surat.
This Centenary of the visit to Surat of one of the rare Patriotic
Sons of India and the rarest Spiritual Embodiment, is
of mammoth importance for the millions of people connected with Sri Aurobindo,
in one way or the other, the world around.
Sri Aurobindo
Society, Pondicherry
has decided to celebrate this Centenary in all of its Centres and Branches. Surat
will be the epicenter of this celebration.
Our Aspiration
Sri Aurobindo
Centre Surat aspires that on the occasion of the
Centenary of His visit, the Lord Himself once again comes to Surat; physically, with all his spiritual light and might.
We pray and invoke and invite the Lord to come to Surat for ever. For
this the symbolic event would be the enshrinement of the Sacred Relics of the
Lord at Surat.
Publication of authentic material, in
English and in Gujarati, in a book form, pertaining to the visit and the events
that took place during the visit, including some relevant Nationalist material
and photographs.
A
national level seminar on Resurgent India.
A dramatic re-creation of the events
that took place at Surat.
